New patient exam & consultation at Lambton Dental
Your first visit to Lambton Dental is a chance for us to get to know you, understand your history and goals, and give you a clear picture of your oral health. A new patient dentist exam in Toronto shouldn’t feel rushed, so we set aside the time to listen, examine thoroughly and explain what we find in plain language.
What is a new patient exam at Lambton Dental?
A new patient exam is your complete starting point with our practice. The dentist you see reviews your medical and dental history, then examines your teeth, gums, bite, jaw joints and the soft tissues of your mouth. Digital X-rays are taken only when they are clinically indicated. If you would like us to, we can request records or previous X-rays from your former dental office so we are not repeating imaging you have already had.
The visit ends with a conversation, not a lecture. We walk you through what we found, answer your questions and, if any treatment is recommended, explain your options and the order we would suggest doing things in.
When a new patient exam is right for you
You may benefit from booking a new patient exam if you:
- Have recently moved to York, Bloor West Village or elsewhere in West Toronto and need a dental home close by.
- Have been away from regular dental care for a while and want a fresh, judgement-free baseline.
- Are booking for the whole family and would like everyone seen by the same team.
- Recently became eligible for the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) or the Interim Federal Health Program (IFHP) and want a practice that bills those programs directly.
- Have a specific concern, such as sensitivity, bleeding gums or a chipped tooth, and want it assessed alongside a full check-up.
If you are in pain right now, you do not need to wait for a full exam. Ask us about a same-day emergency appointment instead.
What to expect at your Lambton Dental appointment
- 1
Welcome and paperwork
We confirm your details, insurance information and health history. Arriving a few minutes early keeps this part short.
- 2
A conversation about your history and goals
The dentist asks about past dental work, any medications, and what matters most to you, whether that is comfort, appearance or simply staying out of trouble.
- 3
Comprehensive exam and imaging as indicated
Teeth, gums, bite and soft tissues are examined, and digital X-rays are taken only where they add information.
- 4
Professional cleaning, if it is part of your visit
Many new patients pair their exam with a cleaning by one of our hygienists. If your gums need a deeper approach, we will explain that before proceeding.
- 5
Findings review and personalized plan
We show you what we see, using your X-rays where helpful, and outline any recommended treatment with the reasons behind it.
- 6
Booking your next step
Whether that is a routine recall in six months or a follow-up appointment, you leave knowing exactly what happens next.
If dental visits make you anxious, tell us when you book. We offer nitrous oxide, oral and IV sedation options, and we are happy to talk them through before your appointment.
What happens next
Before you leave, we review the findings with you and, if treatment is recommended, provide a personalized plan. The plan lists each recommended procedure, the tooth or area involved and the suggested sequence, so urgent items come first and elective work can be scheduled when it suits you.
If you have insurance, we prepare an estimate that shows the expected coverage and your portion, and we can send a pre-determination to your carrier before any larger treatment begins. For patients without coverage, we review payment options openly so there are no surprises. Nothing is booked until you have had the chance to ask questions and decide.
Cost, insurance, and CDCP / IFHP coverage
The cost of a new patient exam depends on what your visit includes, such as whether X-rays are needed and whether a cleaning is done the same day. We give you a written estimate before any treatment begins.
We accept all major Canadian dental insurance carriers and direct-bill wherever your plan allows, so you pay only your portion at the visit. We are also a provider for the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) and the Interim Federal Health Program (IFHP); coverage under these programs depends on your eligibility and the services provided, and we will confirm what applies to you before your appointment.
New adult patients can also take advantage of our $99 new patient cleaning, which includes a cleaning, exam and any necessary X-rays on the first visit. Any treatment plan and quote are provided separately, and where you have insurance, the exam may be billed to your plan instead. See payment options for more.
For larger treatment plans, monthly payment plans through a third-party financing partner are available on approved credit — ask at your consultation or see our payment options.

Frequently asked questions
How long does a first visit take?
Plan for about 60 to 90 minutes. That gives us time for a proper conversation about your history, a thorough exam, any X-rays that are indicated and a review of the findings. If you are combining the exam with a cleaning, the visit may run a little longer. We would rather book enough time than rush you through.
What should I bring to my new patient appointment?
Bring your insurance card or plan details, a piece of photo ID, a list of any medications you take and, if you have them, recent X-rays or records from a previous dentist. If you are covered under CDCP or IFHP, bring your member information so we can confirm eligibility and bill the program directly.
Do you direct-bill my insurance?
Yes. We accept all major Canadian dental insurance carriers and submit claims electronically on your behalf wherever your plan allows assignment of benefits. You pay only your estimated portion at the visit. For larger treatment, we can send a pre-determination to your carrier first so you know what to expect.
Will my teeth be cleaned at the first visit, or is that separate?
In most cases we can do both in one appointment, and many new patients choose the $99 new patient cleaning, which includes the cleaning, exam and necessary X-rays. If the exam shows that your gums need a deeper cleaning, or if time runs short, we will explain the options and schedule the cleaning as a separate visit.
Can my children be seen at the same visit?
Yes. We see patients of all ages and are happy to book family members back to back or at the same time where our schedule allows. Children aged three and up are welcome for routine care, and we also offer first-visit exams for infants and toddlers following the Canadian Dental Association’s first visit by first birthday guidance.
What if I have dental anxiety?
Let us know when you book and we will plan the visit around your comfort. Many anxious patients find that a slower pace and clear explanations make a real difference. For those who need more support, we offer nitrous oxide, oral sedation and IV sedation. The dentist will review your health history to determine which option is appropriate for you.
Do you accept CDCP and IFHP?
Yes. Lambton Dental is a participating provider for the Canadian Dental Care Plan, billed through Sun Life, and the Interim Federal Health Program, billed through Medavie Blue Cross. Coverage depends on your eligibility and the services you receive, and some services may have a co-payment. We will confirm what applies before your appointment.
