Children's teeth cleaning at Lambton Dental
Children who grow up comfortable at the dentist tend to stay comfortable as adults. Our hygienists approach kids teeth cleaning in Toronto at a child’s pace, explaining each tool, keeping visits short and inviting parents to stay in the room. Children aged three and up are welcome for routine cleanings at Lambton Dental.
What is a children's teeth cleaning at Lambton Dental?
A children’s teeth cleaning is a gentle hygiene visit designed for smaller mouths and shorter attention spans. One of our hygienists removes plaque and any soft build-up from your child’s teeth, polishes them with a mild, flavoured paste and, if the dentist recommends it, applies a fluoride varnish to help strengthen the enamel. The dentist then checks the teeth and gums, looks at how the adult teeth are coming in and watches for early signs of decay.
Just as important is the coaching. We show your child how to brush and, once teeth begin touching, how to floss, and we talk with you about snacks, drinks and habits such as thumb-sucking in a way that is practical rather than preachy. Children aged three and up are welcome for routine cleanings; younger children can be seen for a first-visit infant exam.
When a children's cleaning is right for your family
A cleaning with our team may be a good fit if your child:
- Is three or older and has not yet had a professional cleaning, or is due for a routine hygiene visit.
- Has plaque or staining that brushing at home is not removing.
- Is starting to get permanent molars, which is often a good moment to discuss dental sealants and fluoride.
- Had a hard time at a previous dental visit and would benefit from a slower, more patient approach.
- Needs help building a brushing routine that actually sticks.
Most children do well with a cleaning every six months, although the dentist may suggest a different interval depending on your child’s cavity risk and how their teeth are developing. If your child has a toothache, a chipped tooth or swelling, please call us about a same-day emergency appointment rather than waiting for a routine visit.
What to expect at your child's Lambton Dental appointment
- 1
A friendly welcome
We greet your child by name, show them the chair and let them look at the mirror and tooth counter before anything starts. Parents are welcome to sit in the room.
- 2
Tell, show, do
The hygienist explains each step in kid-sized language and demonstrates the tools on a finger or a model first so nothing comes as a surprise.
- 3
Gentle cleaning and polish
Plaque and soft build-up are removed with hand instruments, then the teeth are polished with a flavoured paste your child helps choose.
- 4
Fluoride, if recommended
When the dentist advises it, a fluoride varnish is painted onto the teeth. It sets quickly and your child can leave right after.
- 5
Dentist check and coaching
The dentist examines the teeth, gums and developing bite, and we finish with practical brushing tips for home and a plan for the next visit.
X-rays are not part of every child's cleaning. The dentist takes digital X-rays only when they are clinically indicated, for example to check between tight back teeth or to see how the permanent teeth are developing.
What happens next
Before you leave, we go over what we saw and what it means for your child. That might be reassurance that everything looks healthy, a note about a spot to watch, or a recommendation such as sealants, fluoride or a small filling. If treatment is suggested, we explain why, what it involves and how urgent it is, and we provide a written plan and estimate so you can decide at home.
We also book the next routine visit, typically in six months, and send you home with a brushing plan suited to your child’s age. For toddlers, that may mean a parent brushing for them; for older children, it may mean supervised brushing and starting to floss. Small, consistent habits between visits make each cleaning easier than the last.
Cost, insurance, and CDCP / IFHP coverage
The cost of a children’s cleaning depends on what the visit includes, such as whether fluoride is applied or X-rays are taken. We give you a written estimate before any treatment begins, and we let you know ahead of time if the dentist recommends anything beyond the cleaning itself.
We accept all major Canadian dental insurance carriers and direct-bill wherever your plan allows, so you pay only your portion at the visit. We are also a provider for the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) and the Interim Federal Health Program (IFHP); coverage under these programs depends on your eligibility and the services provided, and we will confirm what applies to your child before the appointment.
Please note that our $99 new patient cleaning applies to new adult patients only. Families without insurance can review our payment options, and we are always happy to answer questions about cost before you book.
For larger treatment plans, monthly payment plans through a third-party financing partner are available on approved credit — ask at your consultation or see our payment options.

Frequently asked questions
At what age should my child have their first cleaning?
We see children for routine cleanings from age three, when most have a full set of baby teeth and can sit for a short visit. Before that, we recommend a first-visit exam by your child’s first birthday, in line with Canadian Dental Association guidance. That early visit is mainly about checking development and coaching parents, and it helps your child get used to our office before a cleaning is ever needed.
Can I stay with my child during the cleaning?
Yes. Parents and caregivers are welcome in the treatment room, and many younger children settle more easily with a familiar face nearby. Some older children prefer a bit of independence, and we are happy to follow their lead. Either way, we keep you informed about what we are doing and what we find, so you leave with a clear picture of your child’s oral health.
What if my child is nervous or refuses to open their mouth?
That is common, especially at a first visit, and we plan for it. We never rush or force a child. Sometimes the first appointment is simply a chance to sit in the chair, count teeth and go home with a sticker. If your child needs more support, tell us when you book so we can allow extra time. For children with significant anxiety, the dentist can discuss whether sedation is appropriate after reviewing their health history.
Does a children's cleaning include fluoride?
Not automatically. Fluoride varnish is applied when the dentist recommends it, which depends on your child’s age, cavity history, diet and how well plaque is being controlled at home. Many children benefit from it, and it takes only a minute to apply. If you have questions or preferences about fluoride, let us know and we will talk them through with you before deciding.
How often should my child have their teeth cleaned?
For most children, a cleaning and check-up every six months works well. The dentist may suggest a shorter interval for children who are prone to cavities, wear braces or have trouble brushing thoroughly, and a longer one in some low-risk cases. We set the schedule based on what we see at each visit rather than a fixed rule, and we adjust it as your child grows.
Is the $99 new patient cleaning available for children?
No, that offer is for new adult patients. Children’s cleanings are billed at our regular fee, and we provide an estimate before the visit. If your child has dental insurance, we direct-bill wherever the plan allows. Families eligible for the CDCP or IFHP can also be seen under those programs; coverage depends on eligibility and the services provided, and we confirm what applies beforehand.
