Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) at Lambton Dental

Lambton Dental is enrolled as a Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) provider, so eligible residents can book with us and we direct-bill Sun Life for the covered portion of your care. Bring your CDCP member letter and we handle the paperwork.

What is the Canadian Dental Care Plan?

The Canadian Dental Care Plan is a federal program that helps eligible Canadian residents cover the cost of dental care. It is administered by Sun Life on behalf of the Government of Canada, and eligibility is determined by the federal government based on your household adjusted family net income, your age or family situation and whether you have access to other dental insurance.

The program does not cover every service and every cost, and there may be a co-payment based on your household income. The federal government publishes the current details, including how to apply, on the official Canadian Dental Care Plan page. We follow those rules and bill Sun Life directly for covered services.

Who the plan is right for

CDCP is designed for Canadian residents who do not have access to dental insurance through work, school or a private policy. You may benefit from talking to us about CDCP if you:

  • Have received a welcome letter from Service Canada or Sun Life confirming your CDCP coverage start date.
  • Are between six and 64 years old and became eligible in a recent expansion of the plan.
  • Are a senior aged 65 or over who has been enrolled since the earlier phases of the plan.
  • Care for a child, grandchild or dependent adult who is on CDCP and needs a dentist who bills the program directly.

If you are not sure whether you are eligible, apply or check your status on the official Government of Canada page — Lambton Dental does not determine eligibility.

What to expect at your CDCP visit

  1. Share your CDCP details when you book

We enter your member ID so we can confirm coverage before you sit down.

  2. Bring your CDCP letter and photo ID

The welcome letter shows your coverage start date and any co-payment tier.

  3. We verify coverage with Sun Life

The front desk confirms which services are covered for you at today's visit before any treatment begins.

  4. Care happens

The dentist reviews what you need, explains what CDCP covers today, what may require pre-authorization and what is optional.

  5. We bill Sun Life directly

You pay only your co-payment, if any, at the end of the visit and we submit the claim on your behalf.

What CDCP covers and what it does not

CDCP covers a defined list of dental services, including exams, cleanings, X-rays, fillings, extractions and some crowns, root canals, dentures and prevention. The current service list, frequency limits and fee schedule are set by the federal program and can change year to year, so we always verify your specific coverage before treatment. Frequency limits mean, for example, that CDCP will pay for a routine cleaning once every set number of months rather than on demand.

Some services require pre-authorization from Sun Life before they can go ahead, and services outside the covered list — such as cosmetic whitening or elective work — remain your out-of-pocket cost. Your co-payment, if you have one, is set by the federal government based on your household income and applies to all covered services in the same way. We prepare and submit any pre-authorization request to Sun Life on your behalf so you do not have to navigate that paperwork.

Direct billing Sun Life for your CDCP care

Lambton Dental submits your claim to Sun Life electronically at the end of the visit and collects only your co-payment, if any. For pre-authorized treatment we handle the paperwork with Sun Life before we begin so there are no surprises on the day.

If a service you want is not covered by CDCP, we tell you before treatment starts and explain what it would cost so you can decide. Payment plans for larger elective treatment through a third-party financing partner are available on approved credit — see payment plans for details.

There may be a co-payment for your care, set by the federal government based on your household income. If you have a co-payment it applies to every covered service in the same way, and we collect only that amount at the end of your visit. If you have no co-payment, covered services are paid in full by CDCP.

CDCP covers a defined list of services including exams, cleanings, X-rays, fillings, extractions and some crowns, root canals, dentures and prevention, subject to frequency limits and the current federal fee schedule. Some larger treatment needs pre-authorization from Sun Life, which we handle for you before treatment begins.

Yes. We see patients of all ages and are happy to book family members back-to-back or at the same time where our schedule allows. Children on CDCP are welcome, and we submit claims for every eligible family member the same way.

We will tell you before treatment starts and provide a written estimate of what it would cost. For larger elective treatment, payment plans through a third-party financing partner are available on approved credit. Nothing outside your covered services is booked without your say-so.
